One of the highlights for campers every summer is their trip to Waltham Fields Community Farm. Waltham Fields Community Farm is a non-profit organization supporting farmland preservation, hunger relief, and education. The Children’s Learning Garden Program that they run began in 1998 as a joint project with Cambridge Adventure Day Camp. The program was set up to give our campers the opportunity to learn about how food grows. Children’s Learning Garden programs enable hands-on learning about natural ecosystems, crop production and the farm environment, nutrition and food choices, and group cooperation. Children participate in a range of activities such as planting vegetables and cover crops, picking potato bugs off of plants, exploring the compost pile, making observations and keeping journals, playing games, and cooking up tasty farm recipes. The staff focuses heavily on ensuring participants have the chance to make and try healthful, farm fresh snacks, as farm-to-table programming is a core part of their lesson plans.
Today, our youngest campers had the opportunity to go to Waltham for the first of two days of adventuring. Each of our groups will be going in the coming weeks, and the kids will no doubt enjoy an experience that's been meaningful to CADC campers for more than a decade.
On-site in Newton, kids had a blast learning about the importance of adding color to their diet and did so by creating delicious (and nutritious!) veggie pizzas for today's snack. We were a bit disappointed this afternoon when stormy skies kept us out of the pools, but the campers were resilient and enjoyed some impromptu water games on the lawn, along with board games, word searches, and dances lead by our inexhaustible staff. We look forward to all of the fun to come during our second week of camp!
